50 Writing Prompts You Should Use

On the notes app on my computer, I have a list of writing prompts that I either found on Pinterest/Instagram and saved, or came up with myself. I've had this list for at least three years now, and I never do anything with it, but the prompts are always there waiting to be used. So I had an idea: why not share these writing prompts?


So whether you're looking for inspiration, need the next line in your story, or you want ideas for a new story entirely, here is a list of 50 of my personal favourite writing prompts...


1. Write about the day the sun blew up.


2. By the time I had opened the doors, it was too late. He was gone.


3. The fire grew larger every second that passed. She stood back and stared in horror. She had wanted to send a message but not like this.


4. They tried everything but we were still going to die.


5. He was always strange. Ever since I had first met him, he always walked like that, talked like that, looked like that. But I never asked any questions. I thought that was just him- just how he was.


6. She didn't know the difference between an assassin and a murderer, but she was pretty sure she had just become at least one.


7. That was the day the mirror spoke back.


8. She searched through the chest, ripping random pieces of paper here and there.


9. The third time she broke the bullet proof glass, I knew we needed to talk.


10. He would do anything to escape what had become of him.


11. We were all a product of the war, no matter what they said.


12. You couldn't kill me if you tried for a hundred years.


13. There was a storm coming, but it wouldn't bring rain or wind.


14. I didn't know they had a dress code, but as I walked into that room, I realized that looking different was a really bad thing around here.


15. In the beginning, I just wanted to be remembered. Now I wanted them to be afraid to say my name.


16. He is just a man. He will fall. I will make sure of it.


17. The chef ran through the night, clutching the son of the assassinated king.


18. Dragons do all the work around here.


19. I loved her with every ounce of my being. We were the perfect couple, a dynamic duo, an inseparable pair. But when he offered me all that money for her head, let's face it... I loved the money more.


20. We're not twins.


21. Through the cloud of smoke, it became obvious that our wall had fallen during the attack. It was time to run.


22. It had always been my favourite job.


23. She wasn't bored, just restless between adventures.


24. This is my confession.


25. You're preparing for bed when you glance outside and see a car you don't recognize. You see the car door open, and two seconds later, your doorbell rings.


26. How bad can she be, really?


27. It took a very special kind of idiot to pull off what he just did.


28. I guess I didn't have a country to run anymore.


29. I woke up one morning and all of my powers were back. All of them.


30. Five are awake.


31. No one cared who I was until I put on the mask.


32. Guardian angles only show up in times of need. Yours just burst through the window, bloodied and bruised, shouting "we need to get out of here now!"


33. You are in a typical awkward elevator ride with a group of other people. Suddenly, a man says "so, I bet you are all wondering why I've gathered you here" and he hits the emergency stop button.


34. The message etched into the antique desk was signed with your name.


35. When searching through historical documents, you realize there are three days in history that everyone chose to forget.


36. The photos were old and taken at different points in history, but you were in each one.


37. They would have to pry that sandwich from my cold, dead hands.


38. I learned how to fly against my will.


39. That magic wasn't a cure. It was a curse.


40. We weren't supposed to be heroes.


41. The shadows betray you because they serve me.


42. Their eyes met. Suddenly, they were alone in the crowd.


43. The Messengers had a saying- a religion: no matter what, deliver the message.


44. I knew this wasn't our first encounter, but for all my trying, I couldn't remember who they were to me.


45. The best way to keep a prisoner from escaping is to make sure they never know they're in prison.


46. Every day you walk down the same street, past the church with the statues adorning the top, on your way to work. But today one of the statues is missing... and the one beside it has a smirk on it's face.


47. This is my war and I don't know what side I'm on.


48. The prophecy was written in sharpie on the wall of a gas station bathroom.


49. In all my years of wizardry, I had never seen someone use magic the way she did.


And finally, my personal favourite...


50. You have just died. When you arrive at the pearly gates, you are surprised to learn your death was easily avoidable had your guardian angel not been slacking off. You now get to decide his fate.
