Ontario's Smallest Chapel

Outside the chapel

Located on the side of Highway 6 in Shallow Lake, Ontario is what might be the smallest church you have ever seen: the Shallow Lake Wayside Chapel. Whether or not you're religious, this little church is a fun stop to make on a long road trip. I think this is one of the cutest things I've ever seen and it was just something so unique that I had to share. The space inside is minimal, with a few wooden seats, some windows, and a small altar.

THINGS TO DO...

Well, it's a church so... I guess the first thing I would suggest is pray. Or just look around. It's a very small space, but if you've been driving for a long time, it's a fun reason to stretch your legs and take some cute pictures. There's a guest sign-in book inside at the back wall, so feel free to sign it or leave a note for future visitors, which is right beside a donation jar and a selection of pocket bibles for you to read.

WHAT TIME OF YEAR TO GO...

The church is open year-round at all times, however, there's no heat inside so I would suggest going on a warm, sunny day (or dress in layers). There are also small worship services you can attend, but I'm not sure the exact days or time they occur. If you do happen to be religious, you could also go during religious holidays such as Easter or Christmas.

A FEW THINGS TO KNOW...

If you are interested in visiting this tiny chapel, you can find it on the south side of Highway 6, about five miles west of Owen Sound and three miles east of Shallow Lake. There are no admission fees, but you can leave a small donation inside the church. You'll know you're there when you see a large white wooden side at the side of the road that reads: "WAYSIDE CHAPEL. CHRIST WELCOMES YOU. THE DOORS ARE ALWAYS OPEN." Both the chapel and the sign are out in the open so there's no way you'll miss it.

The windows and benches where you can sit

That being said, if you're driving down Highway 6, or you're close to Owen Sound, take a look at this tiny chapel while you're there! It's almost always empty so there's no wait time or line up. If you do go, please be respectful (especially if there does happen to be other people there) and remember: always appreciate the small things in life...

(Get it? Because it's a tiny church. I'm so funny).
