Flowerpot Island, Tobermory ON

My father, sister, and I have a tradition: each summer, the day after school lets out, we drive up to Tobermory and go to Flowerpot Island. It's a great tourist destination for those who live inside and outside of Canada. I've been to the island at least five times and each time I go, I love it even more. The natural beauty of the island is incredible (and makes for some really spectacular photographs!), not to mention the unique hiking trails, stone beaches, and the opportunities to camp and take boat rides. I never grow tired of going.

THINGS TO DO...

There are a ton of things to do on the island! This includes hiking, camping, visiting a cave, boat rides to and from the island, an interactive museum in an old light station, a really interesting outhouse, rocky beaches, swimming (although the water is quite cold), and of course visiting either of the two flowerpot rock formations there. The island is also perfect for photography and has some really beautiful photo opportunities. Usually, when I'm at the island, I explore and go hiking for about two hours, spend an hour eating lunch (that I brought- usually sandwiches), and then hang out around the flowerpots as I please.

WHEN TO GO...

Summer. I have only ever gone during the summer, and that is the only time I would ever think of going. It's the time of the season when the island becomes a paradise! It will get busy, so make sure to go as early in the day as possible.

How long you stay depends on what you plan on doing there. If you're in no rush to hike and explore, I'd say 4-6 hours. Whenever I go, I normally spend around 5 hours there, and it really allows you to take your time and enjoy the island. If you only plan on going to see the flowerpots and to walk around a little bit, you probably only need two hours.

WHAT TO BRING...

Based on experience, here is what I would bring:

- Running shoes (or shoes good for walking)

- Flip-flops or water shoes (if you plan on going into the water)

- Sunscreen

- Water bottle (with water!)

- Snacks

- Cash for spending

- Hat

- A backpack

- An extra little plastic bag to put garbage in

A FEW THINGS TO KNOW...

A few things to remember if you do go to the island is that there is NO drinkable tap water (or even running water for that matter). It is an island almost completely off of the grid so-to-speak. That being said, any garbage you have on the island, you have to take back with you. There are no garbage cans and it's illegal to litter.

So, if you do plan on going to Flowerpot Island, make sure to do your research, and remember to book transportation before you go! I can guarantee if you do go, you'll have a great time!
