Books I Am Currently Reading (and if I'm going to finish them)

One of my goals for this year was to read as many books as possible. I love reading, but between school and work and writing, I don't always have a lot of time to do it. That being said, I read several books at once to try and get as many finished as I can. Here is a list of books I am currently reading and if I'm going to finish them...

1. The "Penryn and the End of Days" series by Susan Ee

This is a trilogy series that my friend introduced me to recently. I have already finished reading the first two (Angelfall and World After ) and am half-way through the third. It's YA fantasy (my favourite genre) but has elements of sci-fi and paranormal romance. It's about Penryn, a teenage girl living on Earth after angels have attacked it.

In the first book, angels kidnap her younger sister Paige. Penryn saves an angel named Raffe (who recently had his wings cut off by other angels) to get him to help her find her sister. The first book was decent. I loved the concept of angels on Earth, what they were like, and how they interacted with humans. Otherwise, the writing didn't wow me.

The second book was worse, but the first one finished on a cliffhanger, so I had to read it. I wouldn't have continued reading the series if it weren't for a character named Beliel. I won't spoil anything in case you decide to read these books, but I find that he has the most interesting storyline. He's the type of character you hate until you realize what they've been through. If you read this series, keep in mind it is NOT for the faint of heart- there are some spooky monsters in these books that are the stuff from nightmares.

2. "A Court of Frost and Starlight" by Sarah J Maas.

If you know me at all, you know how much I LOVE Sarah J Maas. She is my favourite author and one of my biggest inspirations for the stories I write. I loved her book A Court of Thorns and Roses, although the remaining books in the series left me feeling a little cold. I have already posted a review for the first book in the series, so check it out if you're interested. At first, I wasn't going to read this novella but decided that I had to because Sarah J Maas wrote it. It's about Feyre, Rhysand, Cassian, (and every other character who plays a large role in the series), with chapters written in each of their perspectives. It takes place after the last book and leads up to the "winter solstice" (a holiday/event like Christmas but with fairies).

I will, unfortunately, NOT be finishing this book. I can't do it. There's almost no plot to the story, a lot of the characters are still grieving after the war (which makes the story slightly depressing), and most of it is just filler. I'm already not a huge fan of Rhysand or Feyre, so as much as I hate to say it, I do not have the willpower to finish this book. Sorry, Sarah.

3."The Beautiful" by Renée Ahdieh

I love vampires, which is mostly the reason why I picked this book up. It's a YA paranormal romance/murder mystery. I haven't gotten far into it yet (I believe I am on chapter 3) but it's about a girl named Celine who fled to New Orleans in the late 1800s. She finds La Cour des Lions, a fancy underground society unlike anything she has seen before, led by the mysterious Sebastien Saint Germain. There are a bunch of murders, and based on what it says at the back of the book, Celine tries to solve them (while also falling in love with Sebastien). She discovers the truth about herself and the world around her (which includes vampires). As I said, I haven't gotten very far into it yet, but so far, it's pretty good. Definitely going to keep reading!

And finally...

4. "A Curse So Dark and Lonely" by Brigid Kemmerer

Similar to A Court of Thorns and Roses, this book is a retelling of the classic Beauty and the Beast story. My mother read it first, who then passed the book along to my sister, who passed the book along for me to read. The chapters switch between the perspective of Harper, a teenage girl from D.C., and Rhen, the cursed prince of Emberfall. Although I haven't gotten more than twenty pages into it, it feels like a promising read. So far, Rhen is my favourite character. He's cursed by a witch to turn into a dangerous beast at the end of every season, and the only way to break the curse is to have a girl from the other realm (Earth) fall in love with him. It's an exciting take on Beauty and the Beast, and so far, I am enjoying it.

That's all the books I'm reading for now. Other books I'm looking forward to are: Ruined by Amy Tintera, Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo, and All the Stars and Teeth by Adalyn Grace.
